Well, Halloween stores are opening on every corner. But for those of us who are true afficiandos of the holiday, we know the only place to shop is Confetti. Dicki and her cast of thousands is opening on September 10th for her 29th and final year. If you’ve never experienced this one of a kind store, you must get there this year. Dicki, the owner, builds quality “sets” with clever decor as well as some great animatronics for really spooky stuff!
She also carries many costumes, tons of wigs, party items as well as household decor that has both quality and charm. Don’t miss out!
Confetti will be located at 193 N. Moorpark Road at the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks, right next to Padavo and Toys R Us, right where they were last year.

Last night, as I walked my dog, Roxy, in Liberty Canyon, I noticed her sniffing something in the street. I hadn’t been paying much attention to the ground, sort of lost in thought. I looked down as she recoiled away and realized she was sniffing a snake! The snake was small, I wasn’t sure it was a rattlesnake, but I wasn’t going to take a chance, so I pulled her even further back. The snake, however, hadn’t moved an inch, not even a blink. I was pretty sure it was dead, even though it was squished or anything. I looked at it for a long time, walked away, came back a couple of minutes later, and it still hadn’t moved at all. I got home, told my husband Peter about it, and he decided to go check it out himself. He asked where it was, I told him Park Colony Court on the street. He came back five minutes later, yes, it was a rattlesnake, and no it wasn’t on the street on Park Colony Court, it was on the sidewalk! So, I guess it WASN’T DEAD! He went back up with a shovel to kill it, and then it started to coil and rattle and strike. The shovel was too short, he couldn’t get to it without being bitten, and it slithered off into the night. I guess the moral of the story is this….if a snake looks dead, and seems dead, it probably isn’t dead but just enjoying the warm sidewalk on a pleasant summer evening. I would say Roxy dodged a bullet big time. I mean the dog was nose to nose with this snake and she didn’t get bitten. A lucky night for us!

City discards old way of thinking about shopping bags
2011-06-16 / Front Page
Ban on plastic starts July 1
By Sylvie Belmond
belmond@theacorn.com
On July 1, the Calabasas shopper can take his plastic bag and stuff it.
Hoping to reduce littering, the city will no longer allow shoppers to receive the plastic bags in large retail stores, mainly grocery stores. Shoppers will be encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, and paper bags will be available at a cost of 10 cents each.
The deadline for smaller stores to comply with the ban is Jan. 1, 2012. The ordinance doesn’t apply to small plastic bags needed for fruit, vegetables and raw meats.
In February, Calabasas officials voted unanimously to adopt the Los Angeles County plastic bag ordinance of November 2010, which bans the use of disposable plastic bags at grocery stores and other retail shops in unincorporated areas of the county.
To help with the transition, the city will distribute free reusable bags from 9 a.m. to noon on Fri., July 1 in front of Gelson’s and Ralphs and from 1 to 4 p.m. at Albertsons and Maddy’s Market.
“We’ll be purchasing 500 bags from each store and will distribute them to their customers. The giveaway event will stop if we run out of bags before the scheduled time,” said Alex Farassati, environmental services manager for Calabasas.
Under the terms of the new plastic bag ban, stores must have reusable bags available for sale and will offer recyclable paper bags for 10 cents each. The fees will help stores comply with the new law.
Lower income residents who participate in the California Special Supplemental Food Program for the Women, Infants, and Children program will receive either reusable bags or recyclable paper bags for free.
According to Calabasas municipal code, first-time violators will get a written warning.
“Usually residents remind business to comply with environmental regulations. If they don’t see improvement, they then inform the city for appropriate action,” Farassati said.
Any store that fails to comply with the law after the written warning will be guilty of an infraction. The first fine will not exceed $100. Second-time offenders could pay up to $200, and third-time offenders up to $500. The fines will be imposed for each day a violation occurs.
The city has been working with the business community for several years to discourage the use of plastic carry-out bags in its jurisdiction. It joins the growing rank of municipalities that are encouraging residents to bring reusable bags when shopping.
Other cities that are taking action to restrict plastic bags are include Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Long Beach, Malibu and Santa Monica.
Californians use about 19 billion plastic bags each year, 6 billion in Los Angeles County.
Plastic can be found in nearly every man-made object.
The lightweight bags, which first became available in the 1950s, are harmful to the environment because they can be blown out of trash cans and garbage trucks and onto local streets and open spaces and into senstive waterways.
The sacks constitute up to 25 percent of all waste and many of them end up in the ocean where they have accumulated into a floating junkyard of trash roughly twice the size of Texas, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
The debris collection in the North Pacific is just one of several that affect the world’s oceans. According to the National Oceans Service, the litter can easily be ingested by marine animals, causing a multitude of problems.
“The story of the floating garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean breaks everybody’s heart,” Farassati said. “Trash is the downfall of our civilization. We could have avoided this environmental tragedy if we were more conscientious about the negative impacts of our ever-increasing waste.”

My husband and I finally got to eat at Kanan Cafe by Jinky’s in Agoura yesterday for breakfast. Breakfast is a big deal to Peter, he loves to go out! So, this was a test for sure.
Located next to Trader Joes, quite visible from the freeway off Canwood, with it’s bright yellow umbrellas, this place was bustling even at 10 or so when we arrived. There was some disorganization and confusion at the host stand as to whether or not we could sit at the counter or still had to put our name in for that, but we were told the wait was about 30 minutes, and happily, it was a little less.
We ended up sitting at a nice corner table outside, out of the sun, but within the nice breeze of the ceiling fans. The waiter was terrific, apparently an import from Jinky’s in Sherman Oaks. I can’t remember his name, I wish I could, he was really very efficient, pleasant and attentive considering the amount of people he had at his station.
The menu is enormous for breakfast with a huge amount of choices to suit any taste and budget. I skimmed the lunch and dinner menus, but they seemed to have a good deal of choices as well, and pretty well priced, particularly for Agoura!
I had the “green and white omelette” which was egg whites, green onions, asparagus, broccoli (I think), swiss cheese, feta cheese and avocado. In hindsight, I should’ve added some tomotoes and mushrooms, but it was delicious, low in calories, fresh and surprisingly filling. Add some cut up fruit, fresh iced tea, and some oat wheat toast and I was a happy girl. Peter had the 2,2,and 2 which is two eggs, two slices of bacon and two pancakes. Since I was having such a healthy breakfast, I offered to help him out with his pancakes. They were quite generously sized, and delicious. I don’t know if they had vanilla in them or extra sugar, but they had a little sweetness there that just gave it a little kick.
The bill was about twenty seven dollars, not cheap, but no higher than anywhere else around and it all and all a good value if you add up the freshness, taste, service and ambiance.
We are looking forward to trying dinner, but they don’t have their liquor license yet so I’ll wait for that!
Give Kanan Cafe by Jinky’s a try. I think you’ll enjoy it.
