FROM THE ACORN:
Graduation night is the culmination of a day of celebration and change when high school seniors say goodbye to their secondary school days and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that college brings. It is also one of the most dangerous nights of teenagers’ entire high school experience.
The California Highway Patrol says the highest number of teen drunk driving fatalities happen on graduation night. And National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that on average, more than 60 percent of the traffic fatalities in the 15 to 20 age group that occur during the weeks of prom and graduation are alcohol-related.
Agoura High’s Safe and Sober Grad Night provides a supervised, safe, alcohol and drug-free environment in which the graduating seniors can celebrate.
Soon after the graduation ceremony, graduates are whisked away on buses to an undisclosed location for the all-night party. The location and activities are kept secret to raise the anticipation and excitement of the experience.
At the event, the graduates can have the time of their lives without risking their lives. By providing a Safe and Sober Grad Night, the school can greatly reduce the risk of harm to the graduates and the community at large on a night when that risk is unusually high.
The 19th annual Agoura High’s Grad Night is the result of the dedication of more than 150 parent volunteers and extensive community support.
“Providing a tremendous event for our graduates is a yearlong process,” said Shari Pevsner, Grad Night co-chair. “Parent volunteers organize, fundraise, and run the entire event from start to finish.”
Even in a year when the economy is affecting school fundraising across the board, businesses in the community are supporting the event.
The annual Agoura High School Garage Sale, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sat. May 2, is an opportunity for the community at large to support this important event.
“With the community’s support, this grand garage sale raises tremendous funds to ensure a great safe and sober celebration and memories to last a life time,” Pevsner said. “Every year friends, neighbors and visitors have fun rummaging through hundreds of treasures and bargains. No one leaves disappointed.”
The final dropoff date for resellable items is Fri., May 1 from 6 to 8 p.m., including for large items and furniture.
The drop off and the garage sale are in the teachers’ parking lot at 28545 W. Driver Avenue, Agoura Hills. For more information on the garage sale or sponsoring Grad Night, e-mail AHSGradNight @gmail.com.
